Adopt-a-Kid Program:

A long-standing program in the CVDGA is the Adopt-a-Kid program which is open to youth in counties in NW WI where CVDGA members reside. Currently youth must be from one of the following counties: Barron, Rusk, Eau Claire and Chippewa. Youth from other counties in the Chippewa Valley will be considered based on availability of animals and eligibility of youth.

Information and requirements to receive a donated dairy goat:

I. For a youth to receive a donated dairy goat they must agree to abide by the following donation requirements:   A. Be enrolled in 4-H, FFA or any approved alternative youth project.   B. Carry the dairy goat project and complete standard project records.  C. Understand that preference is given to youth who do not already own a goat.  D. Properly care for the donated animal  E. Attend at least 50% of project meetings (4-H only) or have regular attendance in other youth groups OR attend at least 4 CVDGA meetings including the Spring Fitting and Showing.  F. Exhibit the animal in at least one dairy goat show or fair during the original project year.  G. Write a report on how the animal did at the show. This report is to be sent to the Adopt-a-Kid committee no later than 10/1 of the donation year.  H. Attend the CVDGA Show in Ladysmith the 2nd weekend in June and help with the show (you do not have to exhibit). Attend, exhibit and help put on the Interstate Livestock Show in St. Croix Falls the 3rd weekend in June.  I. Agree to the following rules: 1. Join the American Dairy Goat Association as a junior member. Annual dues are $10. 2. Register the animal that you receive from the Adopt-a-Kid program with the American Dairy Goat Association...donator will tattoo and register the animal. Recipient is responsible to pay the transfer fee ($3.50). 3. Breed the doe to a purebred or American registered buck of the same breed. 5. Donate a registered doe kid back to the program by the end of the 2nd year of ownership. (NOTE: If no animal is needed for the program, the kid may be purchased for $50.00 from the committee by the recipient.)

II.  Parents must agree to supervise the animal's care and provide adequate housing for the animals. They understand and agree to the following: A. A goat will consumer from 1/2 to 4 pounds of grain per day plus hay depending on age and state of lactation and available pasture. B. Parents must arrange transportation for the youth to the project meetings, fair or dairy goat show. C. Parents are encouraged and invited to attend project meetings and learn along with their child.

III. The committee to place the donated animals shall consist of the following: A. Club co-chairpersons (each responsible for their home county as well as adjacent counties) elected from the Chippewa Valley Dairy Goat association as well as volunteer county representatives. B. All the breeders that are donating animals into the program. C. The committee agrees to the following: 1. They agree to readopt any dairy goats no longer wanted at the end of the project year. 2. A representative of the committee may visit the youth's home to check on the condition and care of the animal at any time within the project year. If they find the animal not properly card for, they have the right to take the animal back. 3. They reserve the right to repossess any donated animal if the committee feels the animal is not being adequately card for or if other rules have been blatantly violated. These animals will be placed with another youth or slaughtered at the discretion of the committee.
